Abbey of San Pietro in Valle - Macenano - Ferentillo (TR)
Probably the abbey, today of predominantly Romanesque appearance, was built on the remains of a previous building, in turn built over a more ancient Roman villa or, more likely, a pagan sanctuary.
Its origins must be sought in legend, which is sometimes intertwined with history and replaces the lack of documented information.
11 April of 491 AD he settled on the throne of the empire Anastasio I Dicoro, faithful to the monophysite heresy, so far it is history, as a result of this, and here begins the legend that however probably derives from real events, although not documented by sources, three hundred Syrian monks , to escape persecution, they embarked towards Italy. Welcomed here by Pope Ormisda, with their authorization they went to evangelize peoples who lived on the Umbrian Marche appennine and among which Christianity was not yet widespread. Founded hermitages and abbeys along the via Flaminia or near it, among the best known monks we mention Spes, Eutizio, Fiorenzo, Isacco, Mauro and his son Felice. Among the hermits who settled in Valnerina, less known than the aforementioned, there were Lazarus and John, whose life little is known. After long preaching in Spoletino, around 535 they decided to settle in a cave at the foot of Mount Solenne, not far from the river Nera, which crossed the valley. Here they lived in peace and prayer for decades, until, in 575, Giovanni died. Realizing that, now over eighty years old, he would no longer be able to take care of himself, Lazarus then begged St. Peter to help him. According to legend, the apostle appeared in a dream to the founder of the Longobard duchy of Spoleto, Faroaldo I, to invite him to seek the hermit and to build for him a monastery in which to pray together with his disciples. In a short time the new religious center became an important point of reference for the whole territory. Organized according to the Benedictine Rule, the community was led for five years by the holy hermit Lazarus, now an abbot, in 580, at his death the place was taken by the disciple James. The three hermits and the duke were buried in as many sarcophagi placed under the altar of the church, where once stood, with all probability, a pagan altar.
