Photographer's Note

Wine has been produced by traditional landholders in the Alto Douro region for some 2,000 years.

Since the early 18th century, its main product, port wine, has been world famous for its quality. This long tradition of viticulture has produced a cultural landscape of outstanding beauty that reflects its technological, social and economic evolution.
A number of Port wine merchants and producers have English heritage to this day. Warre's for instance was established in 1670 when two Englishmen, William Burgoyne and John Jackson opened offices in northern Portugal as Burgoyne & Jackson - initially a general trading company, exporting wines, olive oil and fruit, as well as importing dried cod and English woollen goods.
The Douro Valley today is a UNESCO site, comprising hundreds of Km2 of amazing wine-producing slopes, attesting the ingenuity of man working nature to his benefit.
