Photographer’s Note

On our way into the desert, we stopped at the town of Ouarzazate, which is famous for the film studios outside of town - Lawrence of Arabia was shot there, as were some Star Wars scenes, and so on. But our interest was in its kasbahs - fortified stone houses. The road from Ouarzazate east is called "The Route of a Thousand Kasbahs."

One of the most interesting kasbahs is in Ouarzazate itself (otherwise the town has little of interest except for food and lodging). I think it is called the Palace of Glaoui, but I didn't take notes at the time, and the internet isn't all that helpful here. We were walking through the building when I spotted this arrangement of stairs and corridors, and immediately thought of Escher with his impossible - and mathematically fascinating - drawings of stairs.

Technical: Some cropping to eliminate a few extraneous objects like a modern light. Levels and Shadow/Highlights to strengthen the lighting. A touch of Smart Sharpen.
