Which Language?

Hi Dan!
I understand the confusion! I can't read Cyrillic, but I can see that both these signs say the same thing for 2 different directions! So, how to know what to do?
Another thing puzzles me: I know a Polish girl who told me that Ukrainian and Polish are practically the same language, like Dutch and Flemish! But would it be that they use different alphabets? Because the Polish definitely use the Roman alphabet!
Apart from the interest concerning the languages, I like the composition of your photo, with the great sharpness and lines of the old street lamp and road sign against the blurred background!
TFS.

Hi Marie-Louise,
I'm sure there is much that overlap between Ukrainian, Russian and perhaps Polish too. For both Russian and Ukrainian, they are both written in Cyrillic. While I can't understand the meaning of words, it is not too difficult to learn to pronounce Cyrillic written words. The top line and bottom line are very different sounding. I didn't even realize that the sign is pointing at least 3 directions with the same text! So not only does it appear to be stating the same place with two different names, but that place is in every direction! No wonder I walked a mile the wrong way one day (although I did enjoy the walk). Dan |
