I would typically regard the blown-out highlights in the background as a flaw -- but in this instance, they serve to tell the viewer that the background is unimportant, that we should focus our attention on the woman who is the subject of the foto.

I appreciate your feedback! I'll play with desaturating this foto right now -- I think seeing it in monochrome is a very interesting idea!

Wow, what a genius idea! I've just desaturated this shot, dialed in a very little more lightness and contrast, and WOW! It's a great look -- the slick blackness of his hair shines, the highlights in her hair look great, and (best of all) it ameliorates one real problem area -- the blown out area on his collar!
