Great Matthew-Watt 2007-03-26 17:52

Hi Stephen,
I love these guys, we see them often here in Brisbane. You can hear their strange booming call at night sometimes. I very much like your shot, the eye is a wonderful epicentre to this image. The subtle gold light helps to bring out some impressive features of the bird's body. The feathers in this shot look very rough, like the tree branches they try to resemble, but when you handle one you find out they are very soft indeed. The fuzzy background is very well created, forcing all focus on the subject. Excellent.

Default To Matthew-Watt: frogmouth

Hi Matt, How did you come to handle one of these birds? This pair, although they stayed still for me, looking pretty apprehensive about being photographed, even from a distance. cheers, Steve

I think from memory it was at a wildlife park like Australia Zoo, or it may have been at the free-flight birdshow at Taronga Zoo in Sydney? I remember the event more so than the place, but it was in captivity. Nice to see them flying around my garden at night!
