Hi Roger,
thanks for your kind words on my historical picture. I see that you too have visited places of historical importance, here you show the Gestapo prison part of Theresienstadt ("Kleine Festung") . Your picture conveys an eerie atmosphere indeed!
As you know the former military Garnison was used by the Nazis as a concentration camp for an abominable purpose: to pretend that Jews were simply relocated to a new home, Theresienstadt ("Der Führer baut den Juden eine Stadt").
Best regards Dietrich

Dietrich,
We were in Prague for a week last spring, and took a day trip to Theriesenstadt. I had known of it as a concentration camp, by reputation, but I was very surprised that the surrounding town was part of the prison as well. It was an incredibly sad place, but very educational. Perhaps you did not know that in the town, there was a synagogue that was created by someone who lived there during the war; he painted it top to bottom with various biblical quotations and stars of David. It was kept secret from the Nazis, and later from the Russians; after the Velvet Revolution, the then-owner disclosed it to the government, who now runs it. The painting was heavily damaged in the 2002 floods, but it is still an amazing place. Roger |
