Vodun Drums from Benin, a photo from Mono, South

Photographer's Note

This is a drums combo of Vodun Ceremony at Grand-Popo, Benin. the sounds are very attractive though sorry the photo is not able to convey the sound.
I like to photograph approaching to the subject as close as possible. At that time the camera works on my head.
That photographing style might look like a human monopod (maybe ipod?) instead of a tripod. The photo posted was not cropped at all, it's original frame.

We camped at Auberge de Grand Popo at the night. Grand-Popo is a town, situated beside the sea at south-western Benin.

I like how you have gotten really close to your sibjects. I feel as if I am standing among them too. The colours and sharpness are beautiful. It is a vivid, dynamic photo. And is it your 300th photo or only 299th? Either way, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

hello Hisashi,

considering how heavy the 5D is, I hope your head doesn't hurt too much :) but photo was worth the effort, I like a lot the sense of drama and dynamics added by the wide angle distortion, and, Lisa says, we feel like wer are standing right in the middle of the crowd. great travel photo.

This is a nice action shot that achieves the potential offered by the subjects. By concentrating on the central group of three drummers who are close together has made a real stronger effect, they are the most lively. Excellent contact with the subjects, and interesting that you have got in the middle where you have the best view of them and where they can see you photographing them. You really got very close on this one and fully captured the heat of the moment. Wide angle distortion works well as a special effect this time. I can imagine the sounds (while actually listening steel pan music from the Caribbean at the moment).

An image full of vitality...we can almost hear the tom-tom of the small drum they're beating & the rhythm to which they are dancing. A fine improvised style of photographing...camera on your head...will have to try it! Gives you the closeness as well does not appear intrusive by the subjects...only composition is something which is left to chance....in this one works well
