Photographer's Note
Ethiopian Orthodox churches are built on a different model. They are round with three interior areas: an outer ambulatory, accessible to anyone; an inner ambulatory used by communicants at mass; and the inner sanctum, where the ten commandments, are kept, and only priests may enter.
The rock hanging on the RHS serves as the church bell. You bash it with a smaller rock and it makes a reasonable gong noise.
This 13th century church is one of only two in the area which still has a thatch (rather than tin) roof. It is a short boat ride from the town of Bahir Dar.

Hell Stephen!
a well balanced composition with this group of people, tourists? in the center.
It is an intersting construction with something strange on top.A TV satelite?
And I would like to know what this hanging stone is used for.

Hi Steve
Definitely needs viewing the large version to get the detail of this unusual church. The hanging rock also fascinates and puzzles. What is it? Some sort of rock gong?
cheers
