Photographer's Note

Hewn into the rock face close to the church of Abuna Yamata Guh is this other small cave filled with rocks and bones. The explanation given was that some hermits lived, and chose to end their days, up there and their remains were kept here.

It looks a bit cruel but it is interesing to see what kinds of funerals/ rituals different cultures have. I like the shape of the black part, like a dome.

there all sorts of different burial of and keeping of bodies around the world. This is a unusual one - perfectly photographed.

Hello Steve,
The smaller rocks and the surrounding walls have created an attractive pattern, but the skulls and bones on top of the heap give it an absurd or surrealistic twist. It's a bit fascinating, and a good photo.

I feel I want to know more!
What a curious find!
I can understand that the hermits should be interred there, if that was their wish, but I just cannot rationalise the stones piled up. Was it perhaps a pyre that was not combustable!

Anyway, a fine sharp, photograph ... creating lots of thinking!
