Photographer's Note

Information about Etosha National Park you can find under my first posted photo titled "Etosha National Park #1".

The oryx is the large antelope of striking appearance with long, spear like horns. Males weigh between 220-230 kg and females weigh 100-200 kg and stand approximately 1.2 m at the shoulder. Oryx species were found in all of Africa's arid regions including Etosha National Park. Well adapted to the conditions of their hot, arid habitats and can live as long as 20 years. Oryx typically feed in early morning and late afternoon and sometimes on moonlight nights. Their diets consists mainly of coarse grasses and browse from thorny shrubs. They mainly drink if water is available but can survive days of even weeks without it. Oryx are gregarious animals congregating in groups of 50 to 200, although the average number is 14. The female comes into heat soon after giving berth. The more frequent estrus cycle enable females to produce calves at 9-month intervals.
