Photographer's Note

The seasonal grasses blow in the wind scattering seed which will lie dormant until the next rains. Grass in this environment germinates, grows, blooms and sets seed in as little as 10 days capitalising on the infrequent rains.

It is a plaesure to watch your pictures Dear Rosemary, not only because I am a fan of Sossusvlei, but, mostly because the colors and the POV are always beautiful.

Here, the ironoxide reddish color, the depth given by the wide angle, the dark but overwhelming tree framing the composition, and the gradual blues of the sky are all splendid.

Hi Rosemary

Astounding warm cold color contrasts between the blue sky & the red sand. Looks like the Simpson desert in Western Qld. There is even a sand-hill called 'Big Red'. The terrain & the colours are so similar! Love the sharpness & graphism here too. Good saturation & excellent framing. Tfs!

Hi Rosemary.
A stunning very wide angle shot, with deep colours (perhaps polarised?). But for the tree, it could be somewhere in central Australia - the soil is a very similar red colour. I like the simple but effective composition, with the tree on one side, the slope coming down on the left, and good placement of the grass clump in the corner. But the tree has most attention - somehow it's grown old in this landscape and makes a powerful near-silhouette.

Hello Rosemary,

This is a stunning photograph because of its wonderfully strong colours but also on account of its very simple yet effective composition.

The lines of composition are very strong and the use of your ultra-wide lens (with which I rather think you have fallen in love) has heightened the impact, particularly with regard to the clouds, that stark dead tree and the clump of grasses at bottom left.

Technically superb with glorious colours, perfect exposure and exquisite sharpness.

Hi Rosemary,

I know that my monitor makes this a little too strong in color, I will need to look at this one again on another computer. Otherwise teh landscape is really out of this world, the quality of the image and composition is really top quality. My only concern is the too much saturation, will look again tomorrow.

If I could give you a hundred points for this, I would, it's worth every point. The colours are just stunning, the placement of the grass in the left foreground as an anchor, perfectly balancing the tree in the diagonally opposite corner. Superb sharpness and the wide-angle lens has had a wonderful effect on the sky and composition as a whole.

The richly varying shades of gold to the sand are wonderfully complimented by the vivid blue sky.

Hi, Seeing your wonderful photos from Sossusvlei I become very exciited about my trip to Africa in September. I can't wait, I would like to go there now. But I must still wait three months. But at the moment I am admiring your wonderful photos. YThis is the most beautiful photo from the ones I have seen from namibia. A photo like I love them: below point of view, wide angle, strong composition with the tree entirely inside the frame and of course the vivid colors from Namib.
If I would have taken this shot, I would have printed it in large size on my printer.

For pure technical stuff, you should have selected a lower value for the aperture. On DSLR, usually closing more than f/16 is not giving a larger deep of field (due to the size of the sensor pixel), but degradating the microcontrast by diffraction effect. On small size shot as on TE, it is not visible, but it could be compared on 100% on screen or large print.
