Windows and shutters, a photo from Provence-Alpes-Cote-dAzur, South

Photographer's Note

This arrangement of windows and shutters with their shadows caught my eye on the Cours Mirabeau, one of the main streets in Aix-en-Provence. The faded writing below indicates it was once a hat shop.

Aix-en-Provence is a city and commune in the south of France, some 30 kilometres (19 miles) north of Marseille. It is in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, in the département of Bouches-du-Rhône, of which it is a subprefecture. The population is approximately 143,000.; its inhabitants are called Aixois or, less commonly, Aquisextains.

Il y a plusieurs années que des chapeaux se sont fabriqués derrière ces murs brûlés par le soleil du midi.Des volets bleus pour se protéger de la chaleur l'été.

Hi Stephen,
Nice focus on this section of the building, the shutters and windows create great symmetry, while the slice of bright blue sky puts in a nice touch of extra color. The faded writing is an interesting touch, makes me wonder how long that business has gone.

Nice study of different windows. When I was a kid such window were very much common, but nowadays most of them have been changed to modern windows. Good documentary shot

Hello Stephen,

Excellent photo of this old building in France - I have to let my mind wander back in time & imagine the ladies buying their beautiful hats - after parting with a few francs I see them with their hat boxes in hand - strolling off home anxious to plan their outfit for a special event.
Wonderful photo love the whole content.

Hi Stephen. Yellow house facade with small balconies and shutters. I feel back in the good old days. The light is ideal. and gives the wall contrast and structure. Very nice overall.

Hi Stephen, How charming is this photo! I love all the details here. Specially the old faded writing and old shutters. I like the view of shutters, then I think about Mediterranean sun. In the north, we do not use them. And they are so picturesque. Marvelous sunny atmosphere.

Bravo pour cette fort belle prise de cette façade d'époque dont on lit encore les inscriptions peintes.
L'ocre de la façade est du plus bel effet. Les volets ou persiennes extérieurs doublés par les volets intérieurs sont aussi d'époque et très représentatives des villes du sud.Voilà sans doute une bonne garantie de fraicheur à l'intérieur.

a well spotted and wonderfully rendered detail from this old picturesque building. The play of light and shadows as well as of warm and cold colours is beautiful. I like the sharp details that describe the character and the present state of the building. The faded writing evokes a ghost of its past glory. I like very much the way you've focused on this detail and how you've framed it, leaving a very narrow but attractive and interesting strip of context on the left. Congratulations and thank you!

you know i have a liking for such windows and shutters in Europe....for some reason we just don't have these here in Canada - I wonder why.
how can i resist the pale blue and yellow combination.
