Photographer's Note
93 Neoclassical buildings, banks and shops were burnt,40tons of marbles dropped and 76 citizens were injured from the marbles, stones and from the dropping bombs (Molotov cocktail).
You can see here and here scenes from the exterior and the interior of the building.
Anti-government demonstrators turned the square in front of the Greek parliament building in Athens into a a war zone on Sunday night as politicians debated the controversial austerity plan aimed at averting a sovereign default.
The ballot – widely seen as the most important in modern Greek history – ignited fury as violence erupted outside the parliament where protesters had assembled, while inside, MPs engaged in fierce debate over the draconian measures demanded in return for international aid.
Protesters wearing black masks fought running battles with police while others held banners saying "Popular uprising!", "It's us or them!" and "Don't gamble away all we have achieved".
More than 5,000 police officers were dispatched to the capital with units being brought in from the countryside in anticipation of clashes that broke out within an hour of demonstrators gathering.

Silence after the rage,
and maybe second thoughts.
Not about the causes for the rage,
the widening gap between rich and poor
& the growing horror vacuum in between,
but about beauty defaced
(and I'm NOT referring to the shops)
Keep faith. We're just as helpless, but we support.
The plasticky smile of the model is fake.

Hello Danos - I follow the happenings in Greece with much interest and feel for the people whose lives are in uproar due to the political and economical strife. Your picture is a strong reminder of what happens in society when the 'ordinary' man feels angry and helpless. Hold fast ans stay strong. Warm regards Rosemary

Hello Danos
Shame to hear these stories from Greece and the dire straits of the other European countries, the normal average person paying for the incompetence of others I suppose. No light at the end of tunnel for now - I hope your country pulls from the brink.
Very good photojournalism here despite the story.

Kalimera Danos,
As I follow the turbulent financial situation in Europe, and Greece as a part of it, situation looks as it is not an easy task to find a solution that will give all sides a satisfactory result. Yet, people protest, and you managed well to document this - but at the end, the burdon of restructuring the economy will be on the common people. Unfotunately, this is a gloom future, and my hopes for an easier one.

Δάνο καλημέρα,
A sad comment on the current troubles in Greece & more subtle statement on the throwaway consumer society and capitalism judging from the expensive designer clothes in the bg billboard. The arson is unsettling & clearly visible. Australia is a good choice for disenchanted Greeks who have had enough & want to get out. Canada & the US are also options. Tfs!

This image, and those of the WS, show us with all its dramatic quality and its crudeness the rage of the Greek people against a few governing villains and a few implacable speculators who have led your country to the ruin.

Hello Danos,
I will become a complicated thought when this photograph is seen. After being inaugurated as an opposite axis to the U.S., long years leave the European Community. Many countries participate and it forms the 1 large economic bloc. It seems to be many test sites, such as integration of single currency, free movement within the area and the economic bloc, etc. It seems that the physiographic situation which is a land continuation also serves as a backdrop. That long history, tradition and wisdom have rooted deeply should also respect. Our country has also learned much systems and technology from Europe in modernization. However, the European Community differs in a situation from an island country like our country. Although the present world seems to run towards the global standard, I think that the independency of a local community and a race is also important by one side. I read because the situation of Greece is grasped by the newspaper report even in Japan. Although I can do only an amateur's view, I expect that the whereabouts of future Europe will progress in the good direction from my distant area. The last thinks that Greek people's judgment is entrusted by it.
Kind regards,
mikio

The second side of your compo tell us about history and then your image is a terrible register of the bad moment your country is crossing. I am a man who loves your country and I wish you and your people and land better days soon as possible.

Hello Dear Danos!
This is really happening in Greece, it is a very difficult moment for the overwhelming part of the population. This problem is not only unique to your country. In our country also a similar situation arrived and we experienced a very difficult moment in the 1980’s. Violence is never a good choice but the people are enraged and upset. We all have to take a part in this problem to resolve this crisis. The photo is a very realistic representation of what could arrive in any country. Let us hope that the situation will not get any more helplessly serious and violent.
With my best regards,
Please try to have very productive days ahead, Danos
