Photographer's Note
I'm in the mood to post some new old photos, ones that I have had around for a while and not uploaded for one reason or another. I can intersperse some of our remaining Copper Canyon shots from time to time, so I'm sort of going back to normal, out of vacation mode and into "hey, look what I saw!" mode. It's more conducive to learning as some of the images will be more fresh.
Well, I said some of them - not this one!
I saw this last summer, in Chicago, Illinois at the Randolph Street Antique Market. The market was inside and out, many booths out in the parking lot for this building and two large floors of vendors inside. The building is the "Plumber's Union Hall" and the Plumber's Union probably made a pretty good penny renting it out for this event. I almost became part of the Plumber's Union some years ago. That is another story - but you ask, how does a computer geek such as myself almost get sucked into the Plumber's Union? They were trying to take over much of the service departments in a hospital where I was working, somehow the Desktop Computer Support guys got thrown into the mix. Fortunately we voted not to have them in our organization. Not without some severe brainwashing from both sides, though!
Anyway, I was waiting for my wife to catch up with me when I noticed this large mural in the stairway on one end of the building. It says along the bottom: "The Plumber Protects The Health Of The Nation", it shows a plumber standing over a drawing of downtown Chicago with the Water Tower and Buckingham Fountain within his grasp.
I liked the mural and I liked the railing and I liked the lighting, but it was boring just like that, so I waited for some folks to walk up and down the stairs so I could get them in silhouette.
It's amazing how many folks stop and try to duck or wait for you to finish taking your shot before they will venture on into (what they think) is you pov. Then it is interesting how many folks totally ignore you... Are they rude, did they not notice me? Or maybe they realized I wanted the humanity in the shot. I can't really say, but now I just say something funny like "Move along, there's nothing to see here" or "Oh man, that would have been a great shot - if you hadn't walked through the scene!" Quite often it elicits a reaction from them (in Chicago that reaction is most often a hand gesture), a smile, or maybe something else that works for my shot.
Anyway, I think that covers it for this morning. Looking back I sort of wish I had brought a tripod so I could have blurred the man descending the stairs and used a much lower ISO, but this was not something I really thought about before we went to the Antique Market. Maybe next time, though!
Have a great Wednesday!

Hi Reed
One of your best IMHO
I like the painting with this person going down the staircase as a silhouette
At first glance I thought it was at the top of the Coit tower in SFO where paintings like this one are displayed
Bravo

Very good shot in every way.The picture is great and your note also.I am convinced that no plumbing could do more harm than no doctors,at least in Chicago.Best regards Wolf.

Hi Reed,
Superb rendering of Light. Excellent composition in low light. I love the moment you have managed to captured just when the person is going downstairs. The painting really looks into your eyes. Very greatly managed to show the light bulbs especially the middle one which is not snatching the whole point of picture and focus.
Thanks for Sharing

Hi Reed,
nice presentation of the interior of one of the shops of the Antique Market.I like the painting on the wall, as the dark figure of the descenting the stairs man.The pale light makes the scene to be very well managed.Informative your note too.
Have a nice weekend,Danos

Hello Reed,
I agree with you about the presence of that person in your frame - he is an essential component. The light is managed perfectly and the composition and framing are excellent.
And I very much enjoyed reading your note, especially about how you "almost became a member" :-)
But it is the mural that really amazes me: were it in Central Europe, it would be considered "socialist realism", and most likely deemed obsolete (and perhaps even painted over by now). This is another example showing that the art that we were accustomed to viwing as "communist" was really the "art of the era", no matter the side of the iron curtain.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice weekend!

Hello Reed! I just had the same mood, before pictures get too old or your style changes, we should bring them out. Great to see this one, it would have been a waste if not shown. Yes people run into your picture but to be honest, I do too. When I work I have no mercy with the tourists ... okay not always ... I also try to help them finding things or make group pictures but you cannot trust me fully and sometimes I hope I have found the right button ... Back to the picture, you really know how to create moods and how to present them with this stylish yellow line and writing in the frame. The man is good, he has to be there, he adds "now and here" ... Have a good Sunday, Barbara.

Hi Reed, like you, I love the light, the mural and this most obliging person who gave your scene such dynamism. The mural has a glow like those you see in old Italian churches. I congratulate you on your patience in stalking this shot. Great job, TFS and I wish you a beautiful week, Lisa
