Single-class school, a photo from Rheinland-Pfalz, West

Photographer's Note

Some days ago I visited the "Landschaftsmuseum Hachenburg", a museum village with wonderful old houses from the surrounding low mountain range Westerwald in the north of the German state Rheinland-Pfalz. Here I especially enjoyed an old single-class school where all children of a village were taught simultaneously in one room. In my photo you can see the classroom furniture from 19th century. This school until 1878 was used in the village Obermörsbach.

There were some pupils with their teacher and the guide told them that in former times it was a common practice that the teachers punished the pupils with a truncheon or by a slap in the face. Asked what he would do today after such a punishment one of the about 10 years old pupils said looking to the teacher "I would employ a lawyer!"
Well, obviously these things have changed ... ;-)

So sehen die schul klassen nur aus die vergangenheit aus und keiner kann mir sagen das das nicht schone zeite wahren !!!!
Ich gange nie in so eine ausehende klasse aber ich tauschte mich immer fur so eine ausehende klasse!!!!!!!!
Frank ,du must langsam die kraft sameln weil du reist schnel die halbe Europa durch
Ich wunsche dir alles ,aber echt alles gutes mein freund !!!!!!!!!

A lovely retro view brought clear and sharp and with good depth. And most important of all giving a godo overview of the tiny classroom. A lovely building from the outside too as shown in your workshop.
What have all these pupils become ?

Guten Morgen Frank,

schoener, gut gelungener Blick zurueck in die "gute alte Zeit"... wie deine interessante Note zeigt war allerdings vieles gar nicht so gut, damals...

PS: Zwergschulen mit 5 Jahrgaengen in der einzigen Klasse gibt es bei uns immer noch, allerdings mit anderer Ausruestung und Didaktik (so hoffe ich! :-)

Times have certainly changed though I'm not so sure they have changed for the better ;-) A good capture of this old time school room where both teacher and children have blackboards to write on. I especially like the lovely warm tones in the woodwork. Thanks for sharing.

j'avais visité également en Dordogne un musée des années rétro avec une ancienne école comme ta photo nous présente si bien cette nostalgie des tables avec les casiers et encriers, les tableaux, c'est super et une bonne luminosité accompagne l'ensemble; l'extérieur de cette école que tu nous montres en ws est typique colombage de ta région
on retourne quelques années en arrière et c'était le bon temps!!
merci de ce partage nostalgique mais que l'on apprécie à sea juste valeur

Lieber Frank,
Obwohl diese Sezene eine Schulklasse zeigt welche 42 Jahre aelter als ich ist, auch ich hatte so eine Shieferplatte und einen Abakus am Wand !
Das heiss bald bin ich auch Museumsreif !!

Spass bei Seite aber ein Stueck Zeitgeschichte und wenn man denkt dass die vielen "Groessen" unseres Jahrhunderts wie Gauss, Humboldt oder Einstein etc in solchen Klassen angfangen haben und null Ahnung von einem Computer hatten !

Très belle image nostalgique, j'ai pas connu cette époque mais en tout cas les banc de devaient pas être de plsu agréable, mangigique détial, avec ces arboises, ce beau bois, le tablue, génail.

Hallo Frank! Das waren noch Zeiten, auch wenn ich sie nicht erlebte. Interessant ist allerdings, dass eine gute Bekannte von mir (sie ist 47) in einem Toggenburger Dorf hier in der Schweiz noch auf diesen Tafeln schrieb und kein Heft besass. Kannst Du Dir das vorstellen? Single-class schools gibt es immer noch, in abgelegenen Orten hier in der Schweiz, und der Erfolg ist sehr sehr gut. Interessantes Foto mit spannendem Text. Very interesting school! Also when I went to school in the fifties, it was common practice to physically punish the pupils. But no lawyers were ever retained!

Hallo Frank,
schöne Dokumentation einer sogenannten Zwergschule. Auf einer Schiefertafel mit Griffel habe ich auch noch schreiben gelernt. Und ein gehäkeltes Tafelläppchen hatte ich auch. Aber unsere Stühlchen waren doch bequemer als diese Bänke.

Bonjour Frank,
Je sens d'ici l'odeur de l'encre violette dans ma jeunesse en voyant ton image. Il ne faut pas retourner à 1900 pour avoir ce type de classe. Entre 1950 et 1960, c'était encore bien souvent ce décor. Merci pour ce partage.
Je ne suis plus guère présent sur le forum ces derniers temps, mes activités associatives et humanitaires me mangent beaucoup de temps. Je fais cependant toujours de la photo mais je ne poste plus souvent ! C'est avec grand plaisir que je viens faire une visite sur le site pour retrouver quelques personnes avec lesquelles j'ai partagé des moments fort agréables. L'année prochaine, ayant décidé de quitter la présidence de ma plus grosse association, j'aurai le plaisir de revenir régulièrement sur ce site que j'affectionne particulièrement. Si cela t'intéresse tu pourras voir sur "jardinature.net", où je suis modérateur, pas mal d'images de fleurs dans la galerie à mon nom.

eine interessante Aufnahme von diesem antiken Klassenzimmer mit vielen spannenden Details. Je länger ich dein Bild betrachte, um so mehr Kleinigkeiten finde ich. Danke für die Reise in die Vergangenheit, wo alles noch etwas gemächlicher vonstatten ging.

Hello Frank,

As a lifelong educator, I love this photograph of a 19th century German classroom. And I like very much your note. With the slates for the individual students, I remembered a story of the great mathematical genius Carl Frederick Gauss. April 30, 1777 - February 23, 1855, regarded as one of the three greatest mathematicians of all time. When he was in the first grade, his teacher asked the students to add up all the numbers from 1 to 100. All the students took their slates and began adding them up. Gauss sat their twiddling his thumbs. At the end of the hour, the teacher came around picking up the students' answers. Gauss immediately picked up his slate and wrote down an answer, 5050.

Only Gauss had the answer correct, since it is so easy to make a mistake. When he asked Gauss how he did it, the six year old boy replied, "1+100=101, 2+99=101, 3+98=101... There are 50 pairs of 101s, and 50x101=5050.

That is pretty good reasoning for a first grader, for a senior in high school, even for a university student.

My goodness Frank, this is bringing back memories! not from the 19th century, but from the second half of the 20th when i attended school as a primary student in former Yugoslavia.It's as if time has stood still, and the discipline rings true. Mind you, i was never smacked as i was the teacher's favourite-since my mother was also taught by the same lady during the kingdom era of Yugoslavia.Thanks for such a blast from the past. Nice photo too, nicely lit and attaining a mellow glow. Klaudio.

Hallo Frank. Ein wirklich interessantes Photo. Es weckt gute und ungute Erinnerungen zugleich. Sehr schön, alle diese Details des damaligen Schulalltags zu sehen. Wann war das?
