Santorini, Geerece...

Santorini is a volcanic island in the Aegean Sea and one of the many candiates for the legendary Atlantis City. The current archipelago is formed during an eruption when the centre collapsed and a rectangular pool, called "caldera", emerged among the islands.

The Greek name of the island is Thira/Fira, whereas Santorini was given during the Latin Empire in the 13th century, to the honor of St Irene.

The first settlements of the modern city of Fira were created in the late 18th century as the islanders avoided this area for fear of invasions, in the past, so they used to live in the Venetian Castle of Skaros. They had built their houses in the most inaccessible areas of the island. Initially, Skaros area was preferred as it was fortified. Later, the inhabitants searched for any further areas around it in order to build their houses. What is more, they needed a flat ground that would offer access to the sea. This is in general how Fira city was created.
