Photographer's Note

Charyn Canyon is a canyon on the Sharyn River in Kazakhstan, 200 kilometres east of Almaty, close to the Chinese border. Over several millennia of weathering action, the canyon has gained colorful formations of varying shapes and sizes.
One part of the canyon is known as Valley of Castles (Dolina Zamkov) for its unusual rock formations, and its length is 3 kilometres with a depth of 100 metres.

The canyon formation is along the banks of the fast flowing Charyn River in a northern flow stretch of about 80 kilometres which is a tributary of the Ile River. The river rises from the Tian Shan Mountains (meaning: "Heavenly Mountains") that is spread over the arid semi-desert to the east of Almaty. In parts, it attains a depth of 150 to 300 metres. The geological formation of the canyon is of sedimentary red sandstone which have been subject to the "atmogenic process".

Although Charyn is a little brother of Grand Canyon, the views are breathtaking.

I will upload Workshop.

My driver Ruslan

As I have written already, from Almaty I went for a four days jeep organized tour and I was the only participant. With my driver and guide, Ruslan, we had a lot of fun and we were travelling like just friends. We talked all the time, stayed in the same guesthouses and dined together (in India it was different). After the trip he invited me to meet his mother and daughters. Seeing my energy he called me "iron Grandma" (zhelieznaja babuszka).
He seemed to me looking a bit like Kim Ir Sen, and not without the reason - his father is Korean and mother Kazakh, wife - Russian.
