WS Two Soldiers

The two portraits are in clothing of soldiers of that time
But I saw several soldiers but not all the same costume, maybe another regiment!

History

The big cities of Flanders, Bruges and Ghent, were conquered in 1584, and with the capture of Antwerp Brabant also had to believe, which would turn the whole south into Spanish again. Parma had meanwhile figured out what the best way would be to get hold of Antwerp: cut off the supply and starve the city. Around Antwerp the route between Antwerp and Dendermonde was closed. Forts and sconces were built so that trade between Ghent, Dendermonde and Antwerp would be cut off. Also, jumps and cities around Antwerp were conquered so that Parma could control the Brussels pace. Beveren was strengthened, the village of Kallo was cleared and occupied. Mansfeld and Mondragon crossed the Scheldt at Cruibeke, although the Zeeland admiralty ship tried unsuccessfully to prevent this. Parma split his army to secure the lances Lillo and Liefkenshoek. The next day, Doel was occupied, 15 July Zwijndrecht, on 17 July Herenthals. Mondragon had meanwhile been moved to Lillo. This sconce was so fiercely defended that the Mondragon took another three weeks before the redoubt was taken.

Hallo John,
Een prachtig portret van deze soldaat in dit schitterende uniform met een statig hoofddeksel. Zijn gezichtsuitdrukking met de glimlach die rond zijn lippen speelt is ook heel sterk en goed op de foto gezet.

Mooi scherp portret, maar je hebt de geschiedenis door mekaar gehaald, vrees ik.

Dit is GEEN uniform uit de tijd van Willem van Oranje en de burgeroorlog waarnaar je in tekst naar verwijst.

Dit is een uniform van een soldaat van Willem I (der Nederlanden), de Nederlandse vorst van de herenigde Nederlanden in het begin van de 19de eeuw, t.t.z. van Waterloo (1815) tot aan het ontstaan van België in 1830.

Als geschiedenisfan moet ik dit dus even corrigeren. Over de 80-jarige oorlog (met Willem van Oranje) loopt trouwens een uitstekende documentaire op de NPO. Die kan ik ten zeerste aanraden!

You have supplied us with some interesting notes!

You know, I feel I know this soldier!
He reminds me strongly of someone I know in the village.
(THey say everyone has a double!)
It's a fine portrait, very well positioned and with excellent, sharp details of his facial features as well as his uniform.
His demeanour suggests that he is a pleasant, cheerful person!

Hallo John,
Een beetje een grappig portret, vind ik. Misschien kijkt de soldaat zo gelukkig omdat er nu geen oorlog meer is. Zijn collega's in de workshop lijken zich moeilijk ernstig te kunnen houden.
Misschien is het zoals Gert zegt. Iedereen die je portretteert, ziet er heel tevreden uit en toont minstens een glimlach. Wat is je geheim?
Een mooi detail is het kleine baardje van deze soldaat. Niet veel haren maar ze zijn haarscherp weergegeven.

Deze glunderende jongeman met zijn geitensikje schijnt zich wel thuis te voelen in dit oude uniform en is er zo te zien ook trots op dat hij door jou zo mooi close up gefotografeerd wordt voor een plaatsje in je eregalerij met portretten.
