Photographer's Note
This is the most pretty picture I've uploaded this year, but it certainly is an interesting place. Just a few decades ago, there were few buildings above ground, but what did exist were the large pits. If you look carefully you can see quite a few!
Believe it or not, these are old Berber homes! Many of them are still lived in. To escape the incredible heat, central court yards were dug out and then rooms were dug to radiate out from the center.
The most famous house was used as Luke Skywalker's Aunt & Uncle's home in the original Star Wars. The place is now a hotel made up of connecting three court yards by underground passage. The Star Was dining scene was far less impressive than in real life. In fact, the real history of this human carved landscape is the most fascinating.

Hi Dan,
Lovely photo. The most important thing is, this is a really interesting place. I did not have any idea about this place before or the life style you mentioned. A true "trek earth" posting. Thanks a lot for sharing such a nice picture. Hope you will have lot of interesting posting of our earth. Waiting for that :-).
