Another street scene from Kabul in Afghanistan. I took this shot initially to show the how the traffic in the capital is dominated by beat-up old yellow taxis, and waited until the old man pushed his cart into the foreground to add an additional perspective to the picture. But as I was cropping to straighten, I noticed how white the burka being worn by the woman on the right of the photograph was, and wondered how she could keep it so clean on Kabul’s dusty streets. It made me think of those pictures you see in advertisements for laundry detergent where all the clothes are ‘shining bright and brilliant white’.

The wires hanging from the poles in the streets are the remnants of Kabul’s trolley bus system. I couldn’t stop the man with the bicycle staring at me. As I mentioned in the notes to the street scene that I posted yesterday, a foreigner with a camera is still very much a curiosity in Kabul.
