Angkor sunrise, a photo from Siem Reab, West

Photographer's Note

Every photographer who travels to Siem Reap has to come away with the almost obligatory sunrise shot of Angkor Wat.

For those TEers who may not have been to Angkor, the temple grounds may look quiet and deserted from this pic, but there were in fact about 200 tourists standing behind me. I had to get up at 4 am to ensure I was at the temple by 5 am in order to secure a spot by the pond that was not obstructed by other photographers.

There were about 20 photographers with tripods lined up on either side of me who looked like they knew what they were doing - the other 180 were flashing away behind us with their sleek silver mini-digitals. I wish I had had the time to explain to them that using flash was not the best exposure choice for this situation!

Well, I like your photo and those colors. I can imagine this fantastic place, I am a little bit sad to know that there are so many tourist, but anyway I will love to be there with them. I love the shadows of the temple and the reflexion too. Good job I think. Thanks

This is really beautiful, David, it was worth getting up at 4 am! I like the rusty tone you got here. It's very well framed, panoramic is ideal.

Somehow it could be sharper, even though you used a tripod.

Maybe the folks using flash wanted to properly light the backs of the photographers' heads that are in the foreground of their shots.

Haughtiness slept by sun on these magnificent temples where I have not crossed a lot of time yet...
Colours are magnificent as well as the centring.

Hi David

I'm not a 'morning' person so it would have been difficult for me to get this type of shot. However & did get an okay sunset from the east gate, when I was there in January 2002. I would just increase size to 770 pixels. Well done.

Well done.
Lucky you that you didn't tell them to stop using flash for the 300-feet-away range. Had you done so, they may tell you to not waste your $$$ on your equipment and... photo software. Many photographers along my path shown me their one-time-use cameras and laughing, "we only spent the cost of 2 packs of cigarette, and we bring home beautiful pictures, too" ;o)

Beautiful shot, well captured.Unfortunately, i m in Angkor at the wrong time of the year.It's been rainy so hardly a chance for nice sunrise or sunsets.
