Photographer's Note

It took 750 000 persons to sculpture these 6000 figures of warriors and horses in 246BC, under the first Emperor Qin Shihuang. Each one, with unique individual characteristics artistically made of the local clay, represents life-size reproductions of the vigilant forces in battle formation. Discovered in 1974, these underground figures are extremely well-preserved with revealing historical details. It's worth a train trip, 15 hours west of Beijing. CONDITIONS: The conditions were not favorable: low light, fenced-in far from subject and uniformed guards watching to snatch guilty cameras. I hid my camera in jacket and risked a few fast shots. By the way, there are many postcards for sale at exit.
