Huangyao is a picturesque village in the north-east corner of Guangxi province. Only couple of busses from Guilin pass here, so it's a bit off-route for most travellers, but that's what makes it fun, of course. There's a big fancy hotel just outside the old town and several small and friendly inns inside.

This picture shows old graffiti from the Cultural Revolution on a street corner in Huangyao. This is one of the few places in China where you can still see this.

People meanwhile as always are busy with life.

Een prachtige sfeervolle foto.
Het contrast tussen de linker kant en de rechterkant, zowel in licht als kleur, maakt de foto spannend. Ook het staande formaat is heel sterk hier.

Great documentray/snap image in the best exposure and framework as usual. Yes Cultural Revolution there was so pity tragedy and I admire again even now the influence was there-- Very suggestive image at all.

It is amazing that you can spot still such views in China. Of courser, it makes a lot of fun to go to such places with no tourists. Real life in hundred percent. marvelous composition.

It's one of those pictures I would have liked to take. A street-view with human presence and a strong local colour, combining daily life and culture (of a kind). It's very well spotted and well handled, almost capturing two pictures in one.

Hi Benny.
Great street scene, some lovely colours and textures, and interesting composition/crop. Interesting Mao period graffiti. I think there's some vignetting here which shadows the seated figure a bit, when I think she (or he?) could be more of a highlight in the photo. Just a thought.

Bonjour Benny,

J'aime beaucoup ce cadrage vertical. Il accompagne à merveille la ligne du mur avec Mao qui pose fièrement tout en haut. Le jeune homme qui mange assis à ses pieds complète très bien l'ensemble.

Hallo Benny,
Heel mooi met beide zijden van het hoekgebouw, de heel verweerde muur met tekening van Mao die straalt als een zon, de oude houten poort en luiken en de dame die waarschijnlijk net een maaltijd genuttigd heeft. Het enige nieuwe en in heel goede staat verkerend, is de Chinese lampekap.
Prachtige foto uit het dagelijkse leven.

I love the contrast between dark & bright areas and deep colour rendition with your excellent exposure-work. This one certainly very interesting to see, capturing an aspect of rustic old China with the image of Uncle Mao really stands out in the setting and superbly juxtaposed with the curious looking woman. The bigger part for me is the atmosphere and immaculate detail showing its aged beauty with history written all over. Super capture and well done with an appealing result of a very evocative composition. Congrats

As Gert noted this photo is a two-in-one a street/genre and a documentary photo of the environment. I like how you palced the guy and the strong vignetting also helps to create a moody atmosphere.

I've been listening to Leonard Cohen a lot this week, don't know why, but your photo gels well with it all. I love the strong saturation on the wall and of course the graffiti of our old friend Mao. The colours of the red lanterns and greenery are a nice contrast and of course the inclusion of the person on the right is the icing on the cake.

A beautiful picture with an excellent contrast between the two sides of the wall (light/colour and dark).

You were able to catch all the very small details caught in the wall that are telling history.

Excellent observation from this off-the-beaten-path place. Well-spotted and taken. You included several important elements in the frame: the remnants of the Cultural Revolution, traditional lamp and an element of real human life of people suspended between tradition and history and the modern and rich China - not for everyone obviously.

Hey Benny, well i have just put in 16 hours of work at the bank, and i remember not acknowledging this photo and another of a similar kind few days back, well here i am, absolutetd delighted to see it again, the faces at the opposite corners, with the soft disappearing tones, what a story this is building up to be..

This is really China, the old graffiti, the woman sitting holding the little bowl and the red lantern... A wonderful composition! And light is just great!
