Photographer's Note

This is a macro shot of a typical meal at the local 'kuai can' or Chinese fast food stall, where I typically eat my lunch and over thirty separate dishes are prepared twice a day for hundreds of hungry customers.

Although an unseemly amount of polystyrene containers are used to take away the food, I always eat my rice and vegetables in a bowl in the garden at the back of the shop.

As you can see, there are lots of vegetarian offerings. In this bowl there's at least the following: 'kong xin cai' (the green vegetable, literally 'empty middle vegetable'), 'zhu sun' (bamboo shoots, the sliced long pieces), 'yu mi' (corn), 'hua sheng' (peanuts).

Total bill? 3.5RMB, or around 35 euro cents.
