An example of some of the less exotic sculptures to be found on some of the temples at Khajuraho.

Khajuraho is a town in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, located in Chhatarpur District, about 620 kilometres (385 miles) south-east of New Delhi, the capital city of India.

One of the most popular tourist destinations in India, Khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their erotic sculpture. The Khajuraho group of monuments has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is considered to be one of the "seven wonders" of India.

The name Khajuraho, ancient "Kharjuravahaka", is derived from the Sanskrit word kharjur meaning date palm.

C'est incroyable de constater la qualité du travail de ces artisans avec les outils qu'ils avaient à leur disposition à l'époque, mais c'est désolant de voir le travail de la pollution sur ces oeuvres d'art.

The high resolution image reveals the details of the voluptuous and erotic sculpture. I am curious about the blackened areas. Any idea what caused the stone to darken, or is the place in the process of being cleaned?
