Tomorrow (15th August), we would be celebrating the 63rd Independence Day of Bharat Ganarajya, the Republic of India. A country with a history of 5000 years, today considered one of the fastest growing developing economies together with Brazil, Russia, and China, these 4 countries together being commonly called BRIC.

Now consider these figures for India, which are for many, quite paradoxical

GDP (PPP): $3.267 trillion (World rank : 5), but
GDP Per Capita (PPP): $2,800 (World Rank : 168)

Reserves of foreign exchange and gold: $250 billion (World Rank :5), but
Population below poverty line: 25%

And the main reason for the paradox is our population. At 1,166,079,217, we rank 2nd in the world after China. However the silver lining is that the Median Age of the population is 25.3 years & the 0-14 year olds represents 31% of the total population. In other words India is a very young country!

Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as significant overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and widespread & deep rooted corruption.

Twin sisters Dipa & Nipa, belongs to the age group which represents 31% of the Indian population. Their future for them would be fraught with challenges. Their innocence so visible here, will slowly convert into hardcore realism & their maturity levels will grow faster & earlier than it did in our generation... Nature’s answer, for adapting to the increasingly difficult & challenging environment the future will pose. For me this is also a symbolic picture, as Dipa & Nipa seem to ponder about their future under the eyes of the rakshash (devil), symbolizing the challenges & hardships of the big bad world they would soon be up against.
