Praying Ganesh. Madurai, a photo from Tamil Nadu, South

Photographer's Note

Indian pilgrims often finance their pilgrimage in Group, family, friends...they rent a minibus and during a week , go from a holy place to one another.
THey often wear the same colors.
The basic one in south India is the black color ( I guess Shiva devotees ).
Here theese men were deeply colored.

Voici une methode dont tu te sers pas mal: division du cadre en deux parties bien distincte. Ici ca marche bien dans ce sens que la figure en pierre 1) se tourne vers nous alors que les h9ommes nous tournet le dos et 2) ils sont tous, homme de pierre et hommes de chair, en priere.

Bonjour Joel,
j'aime bien ce point de vue qui renforce le côté intimiste de ce moment de prière. Et puis, j'aime aussi ce contraste des couleurs des vêtements avec le blanc de la pierre.

Hi Joel,
as the picture was taken around Jan/Feb of the year, the pilgrims are most likely bound for "Sabarimala" (a very popular temple in the middle of nowhere in a dense jungle in the southern state of Kerala) or to "Palani" a hill temple near Madurai in the state of Tamil Nadu.

As lord Ganesh is also called "Vigneshwara" or the God that 'destroys' all obstacles in whatever you do, they pray to him 'first' to seek his blessings to take the trecherous journey thru the jungles/hills.

Good framing by the way.

I love this photo Joel, not only because Ganesh is my favourite indian god but because the way you´ve composed it with this while column and the the colorful clothes of this group of men. This photo tell us about one of the main points of India: Religion. As Tabucci says in one of his books: "To be atheist in India is a curse". Take care.

J'aime beaucoup la composition, comme ils ont dit des autres ici. Elle donne un intéressant contrast et, au même temps, renforce le theme de la prière. Mais ce qu'il m'attire plus c'est le group fermé que forment les hommes, si serrés uns contre les autres, comme s'ils fûssent seulement un homme. C'est une image vraiment émouvant. Extraordinaire! Bon weekend.

Il y a beaucoup de sérénité dans cette image; La cadrage assymétrique fonctionne très bien.
Les couleurs sont très belles.

A good division into thirds. IEmpty, people, wall. The foreground is interesting, well exposed, the middle is great and the empotyness somehow gives it room to breathe. The praying relief and preying men are a great pair.

Je ne sais plus ou j'ai commenté cette photo (sur flickr).
Jolies couches de couleurs, le orange ressort particulièrement bien de l'ensemble bleu/pourpre.

Ce qu'il y d'intéréssant ici et que je trouve bien étudié, c'est :
- le jeu d'équilibre entre les 2 parties: la partie de droite certes occupe peu de place mais son côté massif fait contre-poids avec les prieurs de gauche. L'équilibre vient aussi du côté visual. La face et le geste des mains de la statut compense les visages cachées et sans doute les mêmes gestes.
- de l'asymétrie qui équilibre la compo (cela parait paradoxale): dans l'opposition chromatique, compo en couches pour la gauche et vertical pour la partie de droite, les proportions de chaque partie et de leurs 'poids' visuels.
