‘Karnataka - Hampi - The coracles of Hampi’
The Tungabhadra River is a river in India that starts and flows through the state of Karnataka during most of its course, joining the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh.
Note the round boats, called coracles .
These coracles are primitive, light, bowl-shaped boats with a frame of woven grasses, reeds, or saplings covered with hides.
Indian coracles are considered to have been in existence since prehistoric times.
Although these boats were originally designed for general transport, they have recently been used mostly for giving tourists rides.
You can see this in the WS.
Hampi, also referred to as the Group of Monuments at Hampi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in east-central Karnataka.
It became the centre of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire capital in the 14th century.
Chronicles left by Persian and European travellers, particularly the Portuguese, state Hampi was a prosperous, wealthy and grand city with numerous temples, farms and trading markets.
By 1500 AD, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world's second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India's richest at that time, attracting traders from Persia and Portugal.
The white building you see on the mountain top in the distance, is the temple of Hanuman, the Monkey God.

Bonjour Paul ,

Hello Paul,
Round reed boats with special design, I can only guess that in older era thoe were some sort of worshiping custom on ceramonies.
Beautiful all three posts, colors are vivid and the sight near the lake is attractive.
Have a nice new day,
Ike

Hallo Paul,

Schitterende samenstelling, heel goed verzorgde foto, bedankt.
Groeten uit Oost-Vlaanderen,
John

Hello Paul,
This is one of the (many) places I have missed in India (the country is too big). It really looks beautiful. Indian women anywhere will brighten any photo, but in this case the strange hill of huge boulders also provides a strong focal-point. And then of course these unusual boats give the photo a very special character. I have seen similar ones in Vietnambut never anywhere else. I had no idea they could be found in India. The three photos are all good, but comparing them I get a feeling that the smartphone isn't quite up to the quality of your ordinary camera.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello, Paul!
This rocky mountain in the background reminds me of the one in the middle of the Acapulco Bay, in the South of Mexico, of which I have a photo here on TE. It looks beautiful with its well saturated colors and perfect sharpness, and the people in the foreground give more life and interest to the image! Wonderful composition!

Hi Paul,
a colorful composition, because of the chromatic power of these ladies dresses, and of this river landscape.
The round boats are really amazing, and is very interesting to know that they are a prehistorical transportation system.
A good framing for a vital and dynamic composition, with a great light and beautiful colors.
Well done, my friend.
Kind regards,
Josep

Bonjour Paul

Hi Paul,
The circular boats look similar to reconstructed boats the ancient neolithic lake people of Europe used to go fishing and cross the lakes in. And also the prehistoric 'Beaker' people. The same boats today can also be seen in Vietnam. Tfs.

Hello Paul,
This sounds like a very interesting area, so very different from the slums of Mumbai.
These coracles look like huge turtles.
WE have evidence of their use in and around the U.K. for thousands of years but there, they were covered with hide.
They look very decorative and offer a thrilling journey out onto the water.
I like your composition, with the upturned boat making an instant focal point. The ladies are colourful and animating and, along with the coracles, make a strong layer between the brown of the f/g and the brown of the rocky hill.
You have achieved great depth on the diagonal from the coracle to the to the temple.
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

After writing the critique on this photo on 13th March, I happened to do some research on coracles. The first time I heard of coracles was in Ireland.
Well, we hear that they are typically celtic, and that The Celts came from the Indian subcontinent.
I will add a link about one of these CURRAGHS in Ireland.
Bonjour Paul,
Elle me touche.
Marie-Louise.

Hello Paul,
I'm a bit late with some critiques of your latest India photos. Sorry. :-) This is an attractive and informative post. I didn't know the name of those small, circular boats. I like the hill made of huge boulders, with some greenery in between. They create an interesting mountain of rock.

Hi Paul,
Recently Costantino told me that he already commented on all my photos. It probably is the case if someone has more photos then you and keeps posting more. I think I have seen all photos by Luciano already and I think I have seen almost all your photos but occasionally I find something I have missed.
It is easier if your main profile page displays random photos because one can occasionally spot something the missed before but if it displays recent photos, you don't have this chance.
Beautiful reportage here from a very photogenic spot . The rock formations are so picturesque and of course the ladies in colorful dresses are so photogenic too. Were they not looking at you strangely that an old creepy guy goes around taking a lot of photos of them :)
Very interesting boats, I have never seen ones like that.
My obvious question is: did you swim in one of them? I suppose it would be a risk to drop the camera in the water, s I would probably avoid it.
