Photographer's Note

The “Ganga Aarti” (river worship) ceremony is held at sunset on the banks of the Ganges close to its source in the Himalaya. There is a large and spectacular ceremony held each evening in Hardiwar, but this picture was taken at a smaller ceremony in nearby Rishikesh allowing me to get much closer to the priests. The priests are lined up along the river bank with torches and are accompanied by a wonderful spiritual music. These evocative and spiritual ceremonies are certainly one the many highlights of India.

On a technical perspective I had some flare problems due to the strong spotlight in the background. This frame probably only came out because the smoke shielded the light.

Shot handheld while trying not to fall into the Ganges ;-)
