The colorful umbrella of a snowy day, a photo from Tokyo, Kanto

Photographer's Note

The first snow fell to Tokyo today this year. I knew in the newspaper etc. that Hokkaido, a northeast, and Hokuriku District had had big influence on civic life by heavy snow. However, it is since February of last year that looks at snow in Tokyo. It's half-and-half feeling as new one and delightfullness seeing snow for me. Although I went shopping to the convenience store daytime, I walked slowly with winter shoes so that it might not fall over to the passage, since there was a slope on the way. On the way, although I passed by several persons on the passage, children were frolicking joyfully. This photograph was taken at Komagome Station in February, last year. It snowed twice in last year, Tokyo. I stood a station yard after having finished to shopping. The group of the nearby female high school students who finished the school have gone in the direction of a station. They were walking along at a quick pace putting various umbrella to their hands in heavy snowfall.

I like the movement in the snow as it falls. I also like the dark clothing against the white snow. The scene is well composed.

Hello Mikio,

You desribe the conditions, and the hazards, well, in your notes.
For me, the umbrella is what makes this shot so good. It is focal, it is diagonally orientataed and brings a touch of warmth to an otherwise very cold scene.
A great atmospheric shot.

Good work to capture the individual snowflakes: 1/60 sec seems to be about right. The nearer flakes are blurred; the further less so. Of course the red umbrella is the focal point of the picture, but we can just make out the girls' faces too, which adds an emotional charge.

Hi dear Mikio. i have just read in our newspaper that Tokyo has experienced heavy snowfalls and that the traffic is in chaos. This is a lovely photo filled with Winter charm. The red umbrella provides a vivid contrast to the other colours. It's good that you took car ein walking for falling heavily on the footpath can be dangerous. It happened to me in Paris when i was a child and coming home from school. i was carrying books and did not use my hands to break the fall. Painful! Regards. Klaudio.

Good snowfall picture, with the young students sheltering under their umbrellas. They don't wear gloves and some are leg naked!! Don't feel the cold?

Hello Mikio,
This is an excellent photo with a fantastic atmosphere of winter and great colours. The girls' dark dresses become very significant in the white surroundings and the umbrellas, especially of course the red one, are very eye-catching. The more discreet colours of the buildings look a lot nicer than they probably would on a clear day, thanks to the heavy snowfall.

A very good shot, with the girls walking while the snow is really falling. The flakes give such a perfect effect. I like the sense of movement, the colourful umbrellas and even the background. A very good winter shot! I just think they must be cold with those uniforms:)!

This is a well spotted picture opportunity timely shot with some tighter cropping. A pretty cold weather taken with glimpse of the background on this heavy snowy day that gives a special effect with vivid red is effective strong point of reference. But even under this condition you still have got great dof and registered more acceptably in focus. I like the whole feeling of the picture in excellent tones and contrast, the snowy adds to the atmosphere tremendously. Patience is well rewarded. Great shot, Congrats

what a nice " action " shot........ heavy snow is falling but everybody looks happy.
the background looks like .... nothing that I have seen before..... the snow is like a cosmetic treatment to the buildings.

Exquisite composition, beautiful colors - not only of the umbrellas but also of the apartments buildings in the background. The white snowflakes against the apartment buildings yield a pretty scene.
