Photographer's Note

A road crossing in Umeda, the center and business district of Osaka. Located close to the main central station and close to Shin-Osaka (the hub for Shinkansen) it is almost always busy, as most commuters from towns in the surrounding like Kyoto, Kobe, Ashiya and Nara arrive here to commute further to their work places. Most of the people are either young people going for shopping or the typical Salarymen (サラリーマン).

Hello Franz,
This is a very strong image. Your viewpoint has captured very well the stripes of the crossing with the dozens of people getting on with their daily lives. The b/w treatment emphasises the graphic quality of this tremendous photo. Lovely light and gentle shadows - excellent!

well choosen high POV to get the zebra crossing, and good idea to convert in B&W to be focus only on the many walking persons, giving the sense of crowdy contry.

Hello Franz

This one stands out in your latest gallery page, because of its strict bl/w composition and high pov. The light is a bit harsh and results in some slightly overexposed patches of white. This might have been avoided by moving yourself a bit, but then you wouldn't have got the parallel lines this way. An alternative might be a shorter exposure, which might also lead to more contrasts in the shot. I tend to jam the exposure down, sometimes a bit unorthodox, but I like the results. Just an idea...

this is a wonderful photo where the black and white, the tight frame and the graphism of the zebra crossing make the sense of movement vibrant and mesmerizing. The shadows multiply the captivating visual effect. Lighting and sharpness are perfect. How many lives, thoughts and purposes are enclosed in this frame! What a terrific POV and graphical image, this is well seen and executed. I would have pumped up the blacks and whites even more to give an even stronger effect. Very good shot.

Well spotted interesting pattern combining the people, their shadows and the zebra crossing. Good idea to present in monochrome. Perfect timing to show a buzzing city at its busiest.

At a first glace, the opening shot of Chaplin's "Modern Times" came to mind. People rushing about in a big city like busy ants. Very well captured. Creative comosition.

Hi Franz,

Whoa, this is quite literally life in motion! It may be a still shot, but it feels alive with movement and an obvious strong presence of the masses. With the directional shadows, I would imagine this would have worked well on any given street, but to have it in combination with the stripes is simply outstanding. It's almost a bit much to take in at first, but a closer look reveals more of the subtle detail and solid framework.

Difficult lighting again, but I actually like the deeper contrast here...I think the black & white format plays to that strength. I bet this would have even more graphic appeal if it were tilted, running those lines on a diagonal. Regardless, I like the punch this packs. Nicely done! Enjoy the day ahead.

very good contrast in a good texture and it is successful to show how much that city crowed although this is a stereotype of showing crowed specially about Japan(for EX:in ``Baraka`` a documentary movie) and i think may be it is be cause of the style of road crossing in Japan that we should accept that it effect by city population there .
but your see is so much respectful
