Photographer's Note
Most photographs of tropical beaches feature the ubiquitous coconut palm, often leaning at a precarious angle to frame the scene. Almost every keen photographer living in the tropics has such a shot. When I saw this dead tree on Bandos Island in the Maldives, I thought it would make a interesting change to the usual tropical beach photograph. The ocean around the Maldives really is this gorgeous turquoise colour (when the sky is not cloudy) because the water is so clean and clear, and the beaches are as white as I have seen anywhere in the world. I increased the colour saturation and contrast a little, but not by much. Some of the other shots I took in the Maldives have the sea with an even deeper turquoise colour without any adjustment to CS or contrast. There are about 1,200 islands in the Maldives, stretched out over an area of more than 750 km, north to south, in the central Indian Ocean, and 120 km west to east. I expect there are many islands on which nobody with a camera has ever set foot.

Hi David
I like the way you have used this tree to frame the shot. I too found this type of tree to be more interesting and attractive than the ubiquitous palm. I think you've captured a good representation of the colours here. There's a nice secluded feel to this shot.

Hello David, I like the colours and light of this picture. They are very attractive and give the shot a postcard feel. The tree is an interesting shape and nicely positioned off centre. The bough frames the sea and beach well.

Hello David,
I am surprised that I haven't criticised that photo yet, because I know it for some time. It is certainly one of my favourite from Maldives.
Colours are absolutely unique and well captured... but without the presence of the dead tree all this would just be an appealing post card.
Here it is an artpiece !
Thanks a lot

Hello David,
This is your earliest post extant, shot in March of 2003, posted in June of 2005, and last reviewed in October 2006. A dead tree on the beach in the Maldives is indeed a rare photo presented on TE or anywhere else. The brilliant colors of the Ocean, the pristine conditions do suggest a suburb of Paradise. Did the Tsounami do much damage to the Maldives, have you been back at all since you shot this extraordinary photofraph over four years ago.mthe tee looks like a very large piece of driftwood, an no doubt it is hardwood, able to weather the elements well.
Warm regards,
Bulent
