Photographer's Note
This tradition of Padaung young girls wearing rings is fortunately dying out in Myanmar, yet unbelievably the Paduang (that are refugees in Northern Thailand) are encouraged to wear their rings as a tourist attraction. I also heard that an handicraft village was set up in Pattaya so that the lazy tourists didn't have to travel far to see them. Unbelievable! Sometimes I am glad that the world cannot travel now.

Hello Elaine,
It's a beautiful portrait – in a way. The girl doesn't look happy, but maybe she is just shy of you and the camera. This was taken 12 years ago, so I sincerely hope she doesn't have to wear these rings around her neck anymore.
Best regards,
Gert

HI Elaine,a centuries-old tradition that fortunately is disappearing, but still some girls are sacrificed in the name of tourism, an attraction like animals at the zoo, and her gaze is perfect to make people understand the suffering of this poor girl, the branch in Pattaya is truly incredible! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hi Elaine
A good portrait of the sad looking girl. Those rings must be extremely uncomfortable.
cheers

Hello Elaine,
What a gripping photograph!
We just cannot avoid the sadness in her eyes! You have composed the photograph extremely well, the young girl strongly positioned off-centre, against a useful but non-distracting b/g.
I wonder whether the sadness is wearing the rings or some other sadness has befallen her.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Elaine, Sad view of this girl wearing rings. Wonderful eyes. You are right, there are dark sides of mass tourism. beautiful picture. When I was in Maynmar this tradition was still alive (mainly for the tourists).
Best regards MAlgo

Hi Elaine,
So basically if the parents of the child would see you photographing this poor child, they would talk to each other "we are so glad that we put the rings on our daughters neck" look this tourist is photographing her already"
Just kidding.
Beautiful portrait of the sad child,
M
