Photographer's Note
I spotted this young girl with her brother on her back in Taumadhi Tole - one of the Bhaktapur squares - in front of the Nyatapola Temple, which is the highest temple in the Kathmandu Valley. As I was taking pictures of the temple, I noticed the young boy watching me intently with his large round eyes, so I asked the girl if she would mind posing for a portrait shot. It turned out she had a pretty smile which provided a nice contrast to the inquisitive look of her sibling. There was a very light drizzle at the time, so that is why their hair is wet. I didn’t want to crop this too closely as I wanted to include the out-of-focus steps of the temple and one of the guardian elephants in the background. I also liked the contrast between the bright colours of her top and the stone tones of the temple.
Postscript: Please have a look at the fabulous workshop that Hisashi-san has done on this photograph. I would not have thought that it could have been improved so much until I saw his workshop.

This is a wonderful portrait. What a smile she has, and what an intense look of the little boy behind. I really like the DOF, and the colors as well.
I like the little drops on her hairs, sharpness is very good.

This is excellent, David. You're right about the contrast between the looks and attitudes of the two, that's what makes the shot. The framing is good, providing just enough context. Great light--the drizzly day makes the whole place a giant softbox.

Sharp colors and I like the composition. Also she smiles sincerely. Seeing a child smiling like her, makes me very happy. I beleive that all children should always smile. When they are sad you can see that somethings are going wrong. So this is a very good and bright scene.
Congrats.

Exquiste portrait with fine capture of expressions and emotions of the siblings. I am inspired by your people photos. The children I see in Boston are all very guarded by extremely protective parents.

Hi David,
This popped up in random; making me break my usual habit of posting to the latest photo. I just couldn't resist this portait. Great contrast between the beautiful smile of the poised young girl and the sparkling curiosity of that small urchin on her back. I like the inclusion of the OOF temple. Like you, I had a hard time believing that a WS would be a big improvement but he really ncreased the clarity of the colors. Thanks for the suggestion to look at the WS, it will go to my tips file. Good luck with the cherry blossoms, HLJ, pat
