Photographer's Note
I spotted these brightly coloured and extravagantly decorated jeepneys in the Antipolo City jeepney terminal yesterday afternoon – they reminded me of when I first started visiting the Philippines more than 30 years ago when nearly every jeepney on the road looked like these. Nowadays, probably because of the economic situation, most of the jeepneys look like those in the second photograph that I have placed in the Workshop – still quite colourful but not so extensively decorated and with much less artwork.
I have noted though that in certain towns and on certain routes – perhaps because of ‘competition’ between owner drivers – most of the jeepneys still look like those that I saw in Antipolo City. Some people say these colourful icons of the Philippines will soon disappear from the roads because they use too much fuel – that will be sad as they are very much a part of Filipino culture.
The jeepney has been a symbol of the Philippines ever since the end of WW2 when surplus US army jeeps were converted into public transportation vehicles. Since then they have been manufactured in the Philippines on an extended wheelbase to carry 16-18 passengers, and provide the backbone of the public transportation system in both city and rural areas.
There is a fixed fare of 7.5 pesos (about 15 US cents) on city routes. On longer routes outside of the city, the fare is a little higher, but still very cheap for the distance covered. The only thing that worries me about traveling on a jeepney is whether the driver can see where he is going – on many jeepneys there are so many stickers and decorations on the front windscreen, it is hard to see how the driver can see the road.
It would have been great for this shot if there had been a blue sky yesterday, but unfortunately it was very overcast. So I did a tight crop to minimise the amount of sky in frame.
And yes, I did bump up the saturation, but not as much as you would think. The light was very dull, and the increase in saturation has only restored these vivid colours to what the eye sees.
I have uploaded this at only 700 pixels across because with the amount of detail and colour in the image, I had to compromise between file size and compression quality.

Hello David,
I've been to Philipines in the begining of the 80's (Boracay) and I remember the colorful jeepneys which I used sometimes to go the city (Kalibo). It happened to me to make the travel on the roof when was no more place inside the jeep.
In your compo the color saturation is working well and I like to see all these jeeps in line with good DOF and framing.
Cheers,
Marilyn

Hi David,
I've seen pictures of these. I've seen travel documents showing these. But your shot goes over the top. At least four times! Infinity of pop trucks. Fascinating!

What a feast of colour!!! They really love their vehicles and your photo is proof of that. I have never seen nothing like this. It is simply amazing. Both pictures are superb. Well done.

Hi David,
Dull weather that unfortunately impacted the colors but nice close up of this perspective, I love the shapes of these jeepneys, they are real rolling pieces of artwork ! Loud probably too considering the trumps ;-)
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

You must be kidding. Is that a competition to see who has the more colorful and contrastful one or did you paly around with PP. Just kidding! I wonder how the driver is still able to look out of his car.
Good POV taking the diagonal look to sum up the impressions of all of them together.

Hi David,
I love the vivid colors and framing of this jeepney, a true Filipino icon. I always used jeepneys for transportation whenever I visit the country. Similar to sentiment in your Note, I do get afraid sometimes with all the distractions on the window shield - there is barely a room to see for ever-inching drivers. Well done and TFS. Danilo

Hi David - I think the overcast sky helped evenly distribute the light while maintaining the brightness of the colours, true, sunlight would have made them more flamboyant but it also would have added dark shadows over parts, minimizing the bland sky was a good idea. I will (probably) go to the Phillipines next month, at least I hope, no solified plans yet.

Damn nice photo here sir, A nice capture of the Philippine icon. heheh 16-18 Passengers you say? You can fit an extra 50 people, especially on the islands. I will never forget my first ride as a little boy on the roof, And a near miss while I sat on the front wheel well/fender!!
But thats banned in Major cities, Manila, Cebu Davao, bacolod etc.. Not in the islands :)
Thanks for sharing and bringing back memories, I'm homesick! :)
