This photo was taken from the National Orchids Garden.

Since 1859, orchids have been closely associated with the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The products of the Gardens' orchid breeding programme, which began in 1928, deserve a place where they can be displayed in their full splendour. The very design of these orchids is, one could say, 'hand-crafted' by the Gardens' horticultural staff, dedicated to bringing out the finest in any hybrid cross.

Over 1000 species and 2,000 hybrids are now found in the Gardens' collection, and every year, more vibrant and enduring hybrids are added on. So that all may admire and enjoy their diversity, richness and beauty, the National Orchid Garden now offers a permanent showcase, the largest display of tropical orchids in the world.

Hello Renier -

I like your image but there are a few things IMO that need a bit of work. The DOF is either too shallow or the buds in the foreground should have been eliminated by selecting a different camera angle or a different flower. Your focus is on the flower is good but it is loosing it's impact with the buds. I do like the black background as it makes the orchid stand out.

Hello Renier,
I like the pov you have adopted here ranging the flowers diagonally across the frame. The dark background also helps lift the image and give it more impact.

The main problem it seems to me is that there is no clear focal point, nothing seems fully in focus, except, perhaps, the left edge of the first bloom. I think that you would have been better tu use a longer exposure combined with a smaller f-stop. However, having been to the gardens myself, I know that lighting conditions are not easy and it is not easy to position yourself properly -;)

Hi Renier,
Often some of the most simple compositions can be the most striking. This pic certainly supports that theory. The strong contrast helps a lot too. The only problem I see here is the depth of focus. It would be so much nicer if all of your subject was in focus. Apart from that, it's a stunning image. Well done.

Hope you tried out your new camera last weekend. This is one of your older posts with the orchid as a lovely subject. Not sure about the DOF though, seems the camera was not able to judge what exactly to focus. The black BG, makes the white orchids stand out
