Conical hat worn with a sunny smile, a photo from Can Tho, Mekong River Delta

Photographer's Note

This lady is one of the vendors selling goods at Phong Dien Floating Market considered to be the best floating market in the Mekong Delta located southwest of Can Tho province in Vietnam. Most of the vendors especially women still uses the traditional conical hat to protect them from the heat of the sun. However, this hat is not only specific to Vietnam as other Asian countries such as Indonesia, China, Cambodia, Malaysia, Korea and the Philippines still uses this kind of hat. In the Philippines, it is usually worn by farmers in the countryside and is locally known or called as “salakot”.

Hello Michelle

You're my next-door neighbour today, and you've anticipated me by posting a b/w photograph! Can't be often that two monochromes are posted sequentially. And another coincidence: we off to Viet Nam next month. I really like this happy, smiling portrait, although I have to say that the subject doesn't look quite sharp on my screen. Otherwise a splendid piece of work.

A very beautiful smile, open and honest and warm, there must nobody that a smile like this would not appeal too. You captured the moment in a great frame as well, and your depth of field is really nicely done.
I would wonder how this photo would look in color too though! As much as I like B&W, I think this would be cool in color. I guess that depends on the colors though too. LIke Will, this looks a little blurry to me but I think that a color version, perhaps even with a bit of boosted saturation would look well, and the blur would give the color version a touch of magic.
This is a very cool photo, and the light bouncing off the back of the hat is a nice extra touch.
