Burg Hohenwerfen The former fortification dating from the 11th century towers high above the Salzach Valley. Hohenwerfen served Salzburg's rulers, the prince-archbishops, not only as a military base but also as a residential and hunting retreat. Alternatively it was used as a state prison and therefore had a somewhat sinister reputation. Its prison walls have witnessed the tragic fate of many 'criminals' who spent their days there - maybe their last - under inhuman conditions, and, periodically, various highly ranked noblemen have also been imprisoned there including Rulers such as Archbishop Adalbert III (1198), Graf Albert von Friesach (1253), the Styrian governor Siegmund (1525) and Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1611). Nowadays this mighty bastion functions as an adventure castle for its visitors. Among the numerous attractions offered by this exciting fortress are guided tours through the fortress showing its extensive weapon collection, the historical Salzburg Falconry with the falconry museum as well as a stylish fortress tavern. The historic Falconry Center is a special attraction, offering daily flight demonstrations by various birds of prey.

Burg Hohenwerfen was famously used as the castle 'Schloss Adler' in the film Where Eagles Dare, although the memorable cablecar scenes were filmed using the Feuerkogel-Drahtseilbahn in Ebensee. Hohenwerfen also appears in the background of The Sound of Music during 'Do Re Me'.

It is like a castle from the fairy-tales. There must be a king and his always sleeping daughter or a vampire inside. And such background makes my impression of you photo complete. Thank you for sharing!

Such a beatiful castle, as from a fairytale! Very good point of view. Sharp and good light, coloures and excellent with the massif mountain in the background. Maybe you must add that your note is copied from the Wikipedia. Thanks for sharing.

Witaj Jurek!
Już jakiś czas temu dodałem do ulubionych i nie napisałem dlaczego. W ub. roku byłem na wycieczce w Austrii. Autokar przejeżdżał pod tym przepięknym XI w zamkiem a mnie żal d... ściskał że nie mogę wysiąść i zrobić zdjęcia tego zamku. A pogoda była tego dnia wymarzona. Wrzesień. Słońce stało dosyć nisko dając ciepłe światełko. Na niebie tu i ówdzie piękne obłoczki Dlatego powiedziałem sobie NIGDY WIĘCEJ AUTOKAROWYCH WYCIECZEK! Gdy zobaczyłem Twoje zdjęcie dodałem je do ulubionych. Czasami otwieram je i myślę : muszę jeszcze raz pojechać do Austrii.

Georg,
it's a very impressive view! In Quebec, we're 400 years old and we're soooo proud of it. In Europe, some things are thousands years old. So much history...
The burg(means castle??), looks very huge, when we look at the tree. But the background is so massive that it makes the Burg look small. So, at the end, we have a feeling that's us that are so tiny!!Strange feeling!

Georg, what a forbidding and intimidating fortress. Your shot has captured what earl travlers must have experiennced when they cap up to it. Crisp and colotful with great use of dof your shot is great, and the snow makes it almost fanciful. Well seen.

Ach, znalaz³em!
W³a¶nie obejrza³em kawa³ek Where Eagles Dare i mia³em wra¿enie, ¿e Ty musisz mieæ ten zamek w swojej kolekcji. No i jest :). Kapitalne ujêcie. Ten srogi widok do góry. Szkoda tylko, ¿e kolejka gdzie indziej, bo bym Ciê namówi³ na zdjêcie z dachu wagonika ;).

Bonjour Georg,
je suis très heureux d'être revenu sur TE après une longue absence et redécouvrir ces belles images du monde comme par exemple celle-ci, impressionnante par la mass rocheuse qui est derrière cette église.
La cadrage aide d'ailleurs à rendre cette paroi vraiment impressionnante.
Un manque de couleurs vies qui ne gêne pas dans une photo d'hiver.
