Photographer's Note

A bicyclist lays into the pedals (was that English?) as he passes along the Frederiksholm canal in front of the parliament, Christiansborg. The statue of king Frederik VII, who in 1847 agreed to introduce democratic government, blurs away in the upper left corner.

Nice shot Torben!!!...

Action, great panning... cyclist is crisp and sharp... the horizontal lines of the guardrail thru the image defines the flow of movement... also the warm golden archway completes this image...

A great catch, Torben. You did a very good job with the "following camera" technique. The image is full with blurred horizontal lines, and this is so dynamic. Excellent job.

A good pan Torben, Danish cyclist are by my experience born blurred. Don´t think I have seen a night pan before.

I would like him to be less centerd but I don´t like to crop on the sides, will have to do then. Maybe the dark on the bottom could take a crop.

Hey Torben!, this is a greta pnnign shot, The biker himself creates a lot of speed because of his standing on the pedals, but the panning adds SO much to that feeling of speed.
The blue and the yeloow colours are marvellous!
I can understand that you wanted to include that statue, but why so much of the dark space at the bottom of the picture?
Oh, I just read that Ebbe mentioned the same thing.

SPEED. That's all it comes to my mind. Long time no see Torben. Even though this photograph is entirely made of movement, I'm definitely attracted mainly by the dim light. I like this moody hour of the day that seems to be the late afternoon or the early morning (even though it could also be WINTER expressing itself in all its darkness, in the middle of the afternoon in a northern country...). I see you have a new toy...(e 300)....that must change you from your Ixus..

As everyone already said, very nice and straight panning. I actually like the deep black block in the bottom forefround. It helps balance the streaking lights and gives a counterpoint to the illusion of speed, hence enhancing the photo.

Great action shot!! I love the colours and tones. While the upper portion is speeding the bottom part looks static thus providing a resting and breathing space. The windows on the other hand gives that bumpy feeling to the ride. A fantastic shot!!!

Welcome Torben! An image your signature! Vivid colors, dark and with a great motion blur. Also, a good use of the centered composition where the position of the focused biker is strengthened by the warm colors of the building entrance.

I see that you have now an Olympus E 300. How is it? If I could afford to buy a DSLR I think I would go for this one rather than the D70 and 300D. Would it be a good choice? What are the main problems you find in the E300?

Congratulation with your new camera - your did a fine capture of your favorite motif - the motion blur works exellent and yes - he works hard in the pedals.

This image definitely attracted my eyes...
But after a while just enjoying the perfectly frozen biker on the "running" background and the excellent mix of cool and warm colours of your Danish winter scene, I tryed to imagine how it would have been when you had got the biker just a bit more to the left, just entering the image, and cropping a bit more of the bottom. But I'm a bit ashamed saying that to you now, because I just can dream of such a wonderful capture... :o)
So let me congratulate you with this very attractive work Torben, and let me enjoy it longer by keeping it in my Favourites!

you´re one of the wizzards in controlling panning, torben, and once again your composition and colors are a total delight.
as for the low part of the shot, i would have cropped a bit higher, leaving the white/blueish line right in the middle of the 2 dark sides (sorry, i am at a cyber cafe and i can´t illustrate what i mean). this way the place the guy is would be a puzzle (for someone like me, for exemple). does it make sense?

Oh, how interesting. I have a shot taken from exactly the same spot last summer. Guess I will have to post it now to allow comparaison between your wild post-modern action style and my conservative old-fashioned approach. Anyway, this phot is a good illustration of the fact that Danes cycle in all kinds of weather - including snow.

Very cool shot. The thing I like about it is the fact that it is very dark...which makes it work. The streaks of light add a lot of speed and interest to the composition and I don't even mind the fact that the bike rider is right in the middle of it all. A simple yet very effective shot.

BTW: saw the workshop version and I think I like it even more than the original. Good work.
