Photographer's Note
my grand mother reached heaven today, hence this dark mood. I thought this photo I took in december 2003 of the Paris commerce stock exchange would perfectly express my feelings. I hardly accentuated the colors and the contrasts.
This pillar high up in the sky with the hope she'll reach a better world.

My condolences on the passing of your Grandmother Eric - this is a nice thought you have shared here today - something old and solid and substantial reaching up into an endless sky, dark and unknown yes but also somehow warm and enveloping - it is almost as if the column in it's light and colour is somehow confident at this moment of this direction - by it's nature the only way is up now - everything is as it should be.
I hope and pray her passing was peaceful.
all my best wishes Kev

Condolences Eric. How remarkable that life eventually brings all of us face to face with death. Your photo with its stark contrast and other worldly colors is a fitting acknowledgement of this fact. Somehow I feel those cultures that have elaborate rituals around death that are celebrated in public have a distinct advantage over those of us in the West for whom the whole experience is often distant and sanitized. I know you travel the world and have had the experiences of death in other cultures, so perhaps you understand what I'm saying. Watching a wrapped body covered with flowers being carried through the streets to the burning ghat has a profound impact on everyone witnessing the event. Prayers for all in your family at this most important passing. May all beings be happy! May all beings be peaceful!

my condolences...
I remember when I've learned that my grandmother has passed away, I was in Iran at that time. Much too far to be able to come back for a funeral in time.
I was with my friends then. We sat on the roof of the hotel in Shiraz, and we were talking. About death and about life. All the night, till 4am. It helped me a lot.
I hope that you also have someone to talk about those things "under hand". Or maybe you're the one who prefer to think it alone...
Impressive shot, btw.

Cher Eric,
I am so very sorry for your grandmother. I can feel your pain and grief with this shot, the contrasts, the yellow column like a beam of light descending from above, yet standing ever so firm, filled with strength and exuding constancy within change, under the passing black clouds.
Very beautiful hommage to your grandmother. I feel with you.

Condolences Eric to you and your family. I can feel the pain, and imagine why you decided to present an ascending column.
Toute ma sympathie en ce jour triste, la vie est faite de choses qui ne sont pas toujours faciles a accepter.
