The devil's bridge and the Hérault gorges. Considered as one of the oldest French medieval bridges, this bridge is listed as a world heritage site under the path of St Jacques de Compostela in France.
Built between 1028 and 1031, by the two close abbeys of Aniane and Gellone, who jealously controlled both banks of the river. 50 m long, it includes two main semicircular arches and two secondary openings, the gills, intended to facilitate the flow of water during floods.
The legend of the devil's bridge: Every night, the devil destroyed the work done by the two abbeys of Aniane and Gellone. Guilhem, founder of the monastery of Gellone, was brought to make a pact with the latter; he was promised the soul of the first creature who would cross the bridge if he ceased his destructive work. For reward he was sent a poor dog to the tail of which was attached a pan. Mad with rage, the Devil tried to destroy the Bridge, but in vain. Out of spite, he threw himself into the river.

Hello Jean Louis,
A great capture from a nice and high viewpoint of this old bridge and its large arches. It looks so narrow. The rock formations make for some beautiful surroundings and the contrasts of the lit and shaded parts are very strong.

Hello Jean, I have seen a few bridges that were called devil's bridges. All are old and spectacular constructions. Wonderful view of the gorge. Interesting sepia option.
