Sully, Come To Life, a photo from Ile-de-France, North

Photographer's Note

Hôtel de Sully was originally designed by architect Jean Androuet du Cerceau (Famous French architect 1585 - 1649) in between 1625-1630 for financier Mesme Gallet. And it was purchased by the Duc de Sully Maximilien de Bethune (13 December 1560 – 22 December 1641), the Superintendent of Finances for King Henri IV (13 December 1553 – 14 May 1610) who was assassinated in 1610. The Duc was a staunch Huguenot and the faithful right-hand man of the King. Hôtel de Sully was designated as a "monument historique" in 1862. The building houses today The Centre des Monuments Nationaux in Paris.

This is the third and the last of a series of images representing a snowy day in February. The first two photographs are taken during the early morning while the snow was still falling as I took a series of photos. The last photo was taken almost at the end of that day from the doorway mentioned in the Photographer’s Note last time. Everyday, the door that connects and separates La Place des Vosges from this beautiful semi public garden closes it's door at the end of the day. As I was in the process of taking this particular photo, an official was waiting for me to finish with this image. As I waited till the last moment, the windows of this house came to be illuminated in a golden colour. Built in 1620’s it has experienced many periods of transformations, Hôtel de Sully is still well and alive. The lights in the windows reassured me of his continuing existence. I left the edifice with a very fulfilling feeling.

I would like to dedicate this photo to Angshuman-san who is well known among the members. His skills and his dedicated commitment to photography have made the community a better place. I hope that he likes the image.

Interesting note, Nobu, and another snowy scenery along: here the view after the storm is much in better clearity.

very nice architectural shot you have captured with a nice chosen POV...like the textured decayed wall around the windows...nice picture from winter season...

Nice series you presented for us. I like this calmness after the storm. The building looks very nice between the gray sky and white snow. Great colors, texture and sharpness. The snow on the ground looks like a velvety carpet. This looks like a beautiful painting.

Dear Nobu-san,
you chose an excellent point of view to capture the building with the golden light reflected in the windows.
Generally speaking, I find this view very soft, although rather cold (no wonder! it's winter time)... but it looks as if this picture was painted with pastel colours.
Looking at this scene, with no people or modern cars around, in my mind I can easily get transferred back into the Past... a few centuries ago :)

This is beautiful, Nobu. Lovely composition as always. Warm golden lights in windows on a cold snowy day are wonderful even if it is not a historic building, but you are so right, it is cause to rejoice that this hôtel is still being used for a wonderful purpose, to preserve the monuments of France. I suppose one gets used to it but I think it would give me chills to work there!

Ah, now there is less of the bush in the foreground, our eyes can devour more of his beautiful architecture and the impressive garden in the foreground. Very unthinking of those officials to put that bush in your last photo :) I like the warm tones of the Hotel and how they contrast with the cool crisp tones of the garden. The fall of snow creates a very romantic atmosphere. A lovly shot all round, congratulations.

I find both pictures are very nice for look at.
Notwithstanding the white sky, get we yet a nice picture.

This is a beautiful shot, all the more beautiful because of the golden glow of the light through the windows which seem to spark some light in the otherwise dreary light. The graphic effect of the nice row of hedges works well for perspective.

I tend to like the WS version for the saturation...
