Photographer's Note

This is one of the views from the Grands Montets lookout, sited halfway up the Aiguille Verte in the Chamonix area. Here the view is over the Argentiere Glacier streaming down the valley. The main peaks are, from left to right, Aiguille du Chardonnet, Aiguille d'Argentiere and Tour Noir. The pointed peak right at the back is Mt Dolent, the point where France, Italy and Switzerland meet.

We reached the lookout, at 3275 m above sea level, by catching two cable cars from the valley bottom. But in 2018 the building at the base station of the upper cable car was badly damaged by a fire (captured on a webcam at the time) and the cables melted. The lift has been out of action since then, so you can't easily get to Grands Montets at the moment. It's not scheduled to open until 2022.
