Finally classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
The Cordouan lighthouse has just been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site today (July 24, 2021) after many years of candidacy. A fair recognition for this lighthouse which is a true historical monument, it is located at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, surrounded by sandbanks at low tide, it is 10 km from Verdon sur mer and 7 km from Royan. 67.5 m high, beautiful architecture, inside a room has been dedicated a royal chamber, there is also a chapel paved with marble, as for the lantern it carries 40 km away.
The first lighthouse tower in this place was inaugurated in 1611!
In WS another view of the lighthouse.
