Photographer's Note
I was amazed at Sanssouci Park - any little walk in the woods leads to another huge and amazing palace. It seems that rather than each generation or new leader renovating a palace, they would simply build a new one from scratch and thus this area is resident to nearly a dozen German versions of Versaille!
This scan is from my old archive and was not the one I originally picked to represent Germany, but I liked the clouds. It was scanned from the negative with VueScan 8.0 and a Minolta Scan Dual II. It was taken with a cheap Nikon point and shoot zoom - the lens distortion quite visible unfortunately.
below are my original notes from my travelogue - my conclusion is still the same today as I hope to be a minimalist everywhere in my life but my camera bag:
This place has gone mad with palaces! I think there are a dozen scattered through out the park, most with in walking distance. It's a strange feeling, because it feels like out in the middle of know-where, spiral staircases tower out of the hot ground in the middle of know where and on the other side of the building is a garden.
This place was the vacation place for the kings and queens and everyone wanted their time in royalty to be remembered differently.
A fine example of the rococo style is here in the Neues Palace (the new palace); however, it also exists in the others.
I probably would have enjoyed exploring the park a bit more if I wasn't in the middle of a heat wave. It was good though, then Francesca (one of the Italians from Berlin) and I caught up with the rest of her friends for a river tour through Berlin (although I didn't understand a word... all German.
For less than half a second I think it would be wonderful to have a palace somewhere, but then reality sets in... I don't think I can afford the time to clean this place... there's so many places to still see, I'll spend my time keeping my pack light.

Nicely centered and detailed, Dan - and I love the note that goes with this. It's an informative, rather than "artsy" photo, and I'd say even more "classic". Thanks for the information - in note and photo. You're right, the clouds are great here.

Very nice shot, although the picture doesn't show a palace. This is actually the "Berliner Dom" built during the reign of Wilhelm II. It was supposed to be the Lutheran counterpart to St. Peter's Cathedral and the burial place of the Hohenzollerns (rulers of Prussia and later on Germany). From what I've read and heard the building was never really that popular with Berliners and they were sad that the castle next door was blown up instead of it.
