Breathtaking view, a photo from Kyklades, South Aegean

Photographer's Note

Up on a wall fence and with my half body in the foreign property,i 'have stolen' this scene,with the fascinating view of Caldera,with the lucky vacationers as swimming in the pool,seeing straight ahead Akrotiri and from the right the two new islets,Kamenes,as creating from the Volcano activities years ago.

This shot is dedicated to my friend Nobu-nobuikehonda

Santorini,Geologic setting

The Cyclades are part of a metamorphic complex area known as the Cycladic Massif, which formed during the Miocene and were folded and metamorphosed during the Alpine Orogeny around 60 million years ago. Thera itself is built upon a small, non-volcanic basement that represents the former non-volcanic island which was approximately 9 by 6 km (5.6 by 3.7 mi) in size. The basement rock consists primarily of metamorphosed limestone and schist dating from the Alpine Orogeny. These non-volcanic rocks are exposed at the Profitis Ilias Mountains, Mesa Vouno, the Gavrillos ridge, Pyrgos, Monolithos, and the inner side of the caldera wall between Cape Plaka and Athinios.

The metamorphic grade consists of a blueschist facies resulting from tectonic deformation by the subduction of the African Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate between the Oligocene and the Miocene and represents the southernmost extent of the Cycladic blueschist belt.

Volcanism on Santorini is due to the Hellenic Trench subduction zone to the south-west of Crete. The oceanic crust of the northern margin of the African Plate is being subducted under Greece and the Aegean Sea, which consists of thinned continental crust, leading to the formation of the Hellenic arc, which includes Santorini along with other volcanic centres such as Methana, Milos and Kos.

Εξαιρετική κάθετη σύνθεση σε υπέροχα χρώματα. Σκούρο μπλε θάλασσες εναρμονίζεται απόλυτα με το λευκό βάρκες και ομπρέλες δίπλα στην πισίνα. Η εικόνα είναι ένα εξαιρετικό συμπλήρωμα της αγαύης προς τα αριστερά. Σύνθεση μου αρέσει.

Δάνο καλησπέρα,
εντυπωσιακή σκηνή με εξαιρετική γωνία λήψης που σου πιάνεται η αναπνοή. Ήθελα ν' ήξερα με τι κουράγιο οι ένοικοι αυτού του ξενοδοχείου κάνουν μπάνιο,όταν ξέρουν ότι από κάτω τους βρίσκεται η θάλασσα σε απόσταση 300 και μέτρων.

πραγματικά εντυπωσιακή η θέα!
τα κρουαζιερόπλοια ομορφαίνουν τη σύνθεση,το μπλέ της θάλασσας έγραψε πολύ ωραία,πολύ καλό το καδράρισμα με το φυτό στο προσκύνιο να δίνει βάθος,ίσως εγώ να έκοβα λίγο από το πάνω μέρος ώστε το κάδρο να τελειώνει στη θάλασσα,

indeed, it a breathtaking view. This deep blue colour of the sea, ships, and first of old the agave flower. I wouldn't mind to sit under these white umbrellas for a while.

Hi Danos,
It is an impressive sight, indeed, that you have caught skillfully from a great POV, not adapted for who suffers dizziness.
The enormous cruise ships seems small from this height, and it give us a good reference of the scale of this colossal caldera.
The tables and the parasols next to the swimming pool, hung on the precipice, look like an excellent place to take an appetizer.

Yes, you're right, dear Danos, to swim in this pool must be lucky and rich. However, this fantastic view allowed you to capture a beautiful photo, vibrant and with beautiful colors. The tree in the FG gives a good depth to the whole scene. Excellent work, congratulations!

The structures in the foreground let one imagine the delight of stayinfg in that hotel.
Now, is it better to swim in the sea or in the pool ?

Very nice view from the top with the deep blue azure water creating a good contrast to the white cruise liners. Like the inclusion of the thin tree on the left. Interesting to read that this is indeed a caldera...because its so huge today! Well done!

In the caldera there are often two or even three cruising ships which makes a great photographic subject enriching the composition. Here the deep blue of the sea is enhanced by those ships and the sight of the two umbrellas on the terrace. Also the agave flower makes the composition more interesting.
A view one is never tired to look.
