70- Cretan Cats, a photo from Lasithi, Crete

Photographer's Note

THESE ARE NOT PETS! They are wild or semi-wild, like the numerous cats that roam around the island. They are let free to reproduce themselves , but they have to fend for themselves, once the tourists have gone! They tend to take pity on them and feed them, but it's probably more difficult afterwards!
This cat family had made their homes on the terraces of the little rented houses among the olive trees of my post 69! The large garden full of exotic trees was their playground, but they lacked no hunting ground I suppose, in the surrounding hills!
As we are cat lovers (see my group themes: cats everywhere!), it made us feel at home finding a cat family at our doorstep, when we came back from our days out, but I repeat they are not pets, as this photo which had already been critiqued by 15 members (Thank you to all of them) was desactivated unfairly last week. I then received an e-mail asking me to defend my cause, in order to have it reactivated, which I did; but the administrators seem to have ignored it!
Anyway , I hope some other people will enjoy it, and I will be able to add it to my theme!

Hi ML,

I´m happy that this photo got reactivated because it´s so wonderful but also very emotional!

A straying cat who obviously isn´t fed regularly has 5 kitties who are exhausting all her reserves! I hope she can bring up all of them without suffering too much!
And I think there is also a quite interesting family tree: all of them look different - but noone looks like their mom!

Une amusante sur ces sympathique (et beaux ) compagnons et une note qui peut donner un peu de remords à ceux qui suppriment quelques fois un peu légèrement des photos.

Ah ! La revoilà cette photo attendrissante sur cette petite famille. Tu as bien raison de persister, en bonne bretonne que tu es comme le souligne Hervé. Effectivement ces chats errants et quasi sauvages ne peuvent pas être considérés comme des animaux domestiques.

Very compelling image of these wild cats gathering together to catch the warmth of the afternoon sun. It is obvious that these are not pets because only wild cats would reach this level of cooperation. I too have run afoul of the Trek rules against family pets by taking photo of dogs working together in a communal setting.

Je n'avais pas vu cet episode des aventures de TE! Ils l'ont donc reactivee.../ Etant moi meme un ami des chats, je les trouve tres jolis, de belles couleurs et leur gloutonnerie est bien evidente ici... J'ai des chats aussi, ils sont Indiens, puisque je vis la bas... malheureusement je ne pense pas en mettre d'images! Peut etre sur TL!

That is adorable! Poor Momma, she has to feed so many! Besides, aren't those kitties a bit old to be nursing?
We recently had a similar sight in our house. Friends of ours adopted a stray who turned out to be pregnant. While they were on vacation, we took the mommy and the two surviving kittens (one of their siblings was stillborn, another died a few days after birth). When our friends got back from vacation, the mommy was ported back to them, but the kittens stayed.

People usually mistaking street-cats for pets, but unlike dogs - they rarely tamable, they can be wild even if they belong to someone house's.
However, street cats keep mice away.
