Photographer's Note

The geological impacts of glacial and volcanic activity are truly remarkable in Thingvellir. The North American and European plates are moving apart here, at a rate of about 1 mm per year. The floor of the rift was formed by volcanic action and it is relatively thin and is sinking, also at about 1 mm per year. The picture shows a part of the wall of lava which is part of the North American plate.
