Photographer's Note
The famous glacier lagoon at Jökusarlon in southern Iceland is joined to the sea by Iceland's shortest river. After a mere few hundred meters the glacier lagoon is emptying itself in the sea and carries the icebergs with it, where the often get stranded at the black sand beach there.
It is best to visit the lagoon and the beach early morning as the closest hotel is 12km away in Hali (country hotel, farm with own fishery and lamb and poets museum at once) and the tour buses from Reykjavik arrive only around noon when the lagoon and the beach is crowded with tourists and photographers with tripods. Here we where at 07.30am at the beach before heading back towards Reykjavik later in the day.

Nice perspective and wonderful colors. Without the ice in the foreground the pic would be really flat!
thanks for showing

Hello Daniel,
The black soil is remnants of volcanic residue, that's the only possible explanation for the color. Contrast nicely with the sunrise golden light and the remnants of ice upon its surface.
Missing just a possible element to give scale on the beach scenery.
Anyway, I find this superb pic. shows nature's beauty.
Best regards,
Ike

Hello Daniel
There's a great, almost other-worldly kind of feeling to this nature shot and scene. The black earth, the smoothly shaped pebbles and the textures on those three chunks of ice. Excellent picture!

Hello Daniel,
Great view of this black beach. The small icebergs look beautiful against this background and also the many large pebbles make a great pattern. The cloudy sunrise sky is wonderful too.

Hello Daniel,
This is a magnificent and kind of eerie photo of the large pieces of ice on the black sand and the orange/purple morning sky above and reflected in the sea. It is a photo that expresses emptiness and ice-cold winds, but at least it is free from tripods. There are not many colours, but I like these few, and there is a fine clarity with excellent contrasts.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Daniel,
Fantastic picture and at once I would like to go there. But even when the flights are cheap, I am afraid it is expensive, like Norway. And I have no idea how to travel without the car. Amazing black beach and these ice pieces.

Hello Daniel,
It was certainly worth getting up early so that you could have this amazing scene all on your own. It would have had a completely different atmosphere had it been crowded with people!
The predominance of greys and black make the pale amber of the sunrise very noticeable.
I really like your use of the small icebergs, in the f/g. They are details which help explain the location as well as being interesting focal points to create a sense of depth.
Earth has such diverse beauty!
My warm regards,
Bev. :-)

Hello Daniel,
Marvelous threatening landscape. The dark grey/purple colors are on the beach, in the sea and in the sky and harmonize beautifully.
The three pieces ice gives the landscape a glow of the Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.
Excellent presentation

Hello Daniel,
what an extraordinary, poetic landscape, it inspires awe from your picture, being there at this particular hour of the day must have been a thrilling experience. The colours and the textures are fantastic, I also appreciate the sense of depth and the wave coming from the distant background, it challenges the absolute peace of the scene. Great work, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Hi Daniel
yes, I remember this beach very very well.
When we were here it was late morning and we pretty much had the entire beach to ourselves - it was fantastic. Although I remember it also being EXTREMELY Cold and windy, which made it quite uncomfortable once you're out there for longer than 30 min.
We stayed in a hotel in that town you mentioned in your note too :)
great looking shot with the black sand, the clouds, the water/horizon line, and the contrasting ice and round smooth rocks. What's not to like. A must see place in Iceland.
Cheers

Hello Daniel,
Wherever there is volcanic activity, there are black sand beaches, & Iceland is no exception. Strong graphic elements with good sharpness. Tfs!

Hi Daniel!
This looks fantastic, it must be really amazing when there's no one around. I like the composition a lot, the texture of the ice, the dark sand, the morning light... Great shot!
